Business Profile: Nicci Hosking
- What is the name of your business and what is your role? Bomb Dot Com Brownies is my ‘side hustle’ and I am the chief baker and mischief maker!
- Describe your business in two sentences. Home-made delicious chocolate chunk brownies and delectable chocolate chunk vegan brownies too.
- How long have you been in business? I have ‘officially’ been baking my brownies since July 2017.
- How did you get into this business? It was actually the wonderful Mel Gard, Chrystal Austin and committee of KZNWIB that gave me the courage to start – my first order was for 100 brownies at one of the KZNWIB monthly meetings!
- What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced, and how did you overcome it? Baking in Durban Summer is not for the faint hearted! Shew! Unexpected load shedding is a reality, but I try and plan as best I can and always ask for at least 2 days notice, to ensure quality freshness (since I only bake to order) and this also allows for a plan B in case there are any hiccups #thankseishkom
- What single trait/skill could you not have succeeded without? Positive, can-do attitude!
- What is the best business advice you’ve received? Keep it simple. Under promise and over deliver!
- Your secret to business success is? I don’t really know what the secret to business success is, but my secret to loving the life I’ve created (which I think is pretty cool) is in finding a balance between work, family, friends and me-time!
- What is your business goal for 2023? I am actually in the process of planning to emigrate, so my focus is on that and not really ruling the world with my delicious brownies (for now)!
- Tell us one thing that not many people know about you? I was really good at Speech & Drama as a kid with oodles of confidence that won lots of awards at eisteddfods, I had a very small part in a TV show called ‘Bible Stories’ and was a ‘re-enactment’ character for one episode of Carte Blanche which was fun. I love singing when no-one is around and definitely turn to music to fuel my soul and recharge my batteries.
