April 2022 Meeting
April 7, 2022 @ 8:30 am - 10:30 am
Topic: Living a life in full colour!
Join award winning Karen Monk-Klijnstra on a journey through the cornerstones of her lateral and very colourful artistic thought process. She will share with us the madness and chaos that inspire her design ethos. The daily techniques she uses to recognise and celebrate the value of human life, her love for all creatures (large and small) that walk our planet, finding inspiration in the most unlikely places, and being deeply seated in faith with gratitude that opens channels for opportunities in business and beyond. A wife, mother, daughter, and friend who is a proudly South African fashion designer that swims upstream, defying the falsity that permeates the industry.

Guest Speaker: Karen Monk-Klijnstra
Karen Monk-Klijnstra is a proud mom to 4 kids, 2 fur-kids, and an array of enthusiastic clients demanding her attention and expertise 24/7.
She studied and completed her diploma in Clothing Design, at the then Natal Technikon, 1990-1992. She jointly won the Emma Smith Overseas Art Scholarship in 1992, at the end of her studies. She then participated in many national collections whilst holding down a temporary position, to supplement her income, and plan her overseas travel.
Karen started her working career in fashion forecasting for Promostyl in Paris in 1994. It was during this time (1994 -1996) that she also worked for Kingsgate Clothing/AM MOOLLA Group in ladies and childrenswear. This was closely followed by her design work at Lee Jeans, head designer for Menswear (1996-2000) and Lotto Italian Sportswear (2001) in both men’s and ladies’ wear.
She is a frequent and fiercely passionate contributor to South Africa’ s premier shows which include showcasing at SA Fashion Week, AFI Fashion Weeks (Durban, Cape Town and Jo ’burg), Design Indaba several years running, and more recently the Durban Fashion Fair. (2013 to date)
Karen is an offbeat and optimistic, proudly South African fashion designer with a passion for all things local and a heart that believes in the power of a dream. Her design ethos is a cross pollination of her flamboyant style with a street edge.
